What Were They Thinking? Part One

So I’ve written some filler pieces; now it’s time for the good stuff.  Lately, I have been seeing some really bad advertising; for example the Microsoft commercials with Seinfeld.  What were they thinking?  CP + B are known for their unconventional creative strategies, but this?  I find these commercials kind of weird and out of touch, don’t you?  Then again, I have never been a fan of Seinfeld; which probably is the key to understanding these commercials.

Here is another example: Emerald Nuts.  Back in 2007, or was it 2006?  Anyhow, Robert Goulet was the mischievous guy who messed with your stuff while you were zoned out in an Emerald “Nut-less” stupor.  It was an odd commercial, but still funny – not creepy at all.  But with Robert Goulet’s death in October 2007, the team at Goodby, Silverstein & Partners was forced to take the campaign in a different direction.  But why-oh-why, did they have to take this creepy direction?   In the latest spots, Goulet was replaced by the models from the “Addicted to Love” video and by the Swiss Family Robinson.  What were they thinking?  It’s as if the client said: “Well, they are in advertising…they would know what’s going to be memorable”.

Now, one would say that a good ad will be an ad that sells the product best.  But does it?  The Goulet commercials are memorable, definitely unforgettable – especially when you see the international tony award-winning actor crawling across the ceiling.  But the models from the Addicted to Love video…are they that memorable?  Quite honestly, the first thing that popped into my mind when I saw that commercial is: “Dude, are they putting lipstick on him?  Man, whatever happened to Robert Palmer?  Hey, where’s my copy of ‘The Burbs’?”

Am I the only one who finds these commercials more on the creepy side?
