Professionally speaking, some people get all giddy over things that most others would find very strange. I’ve heard accountant wax poetic about spread sheets. Architects gush over blueprints that they wanted to frame as art. For me, it’s POP/POS/Displays! I always have and always will get a thrill, kick out of and smile from going out into stores and movie theaters and seeing what the brands and entertainment companies are doing when it comes to POP/POS/Displays. I got the bug as a kid going into sporting goods stores and movie theaters seeing these bigger than life visuals of my heroes that I had to have! I went back to the stores a few thousand times to ask the managers for these displays, standees, POS, etc when they were done with them. Most gave in when they realized that it was easier to give in to me and give me the object my obsession, in order to get rid of me. Those were the days…
I loved the dimensional nature. The size. Maybe it was the stench of stale popcorn and corrugate? Who knows? Fast forward almost 35 years later and here I am creating said work and I have always believed in the warped benchmark that if people are stealing your POP/POS/Displays, you are doing a good job! Lovely article. I remember myself doing the exact same thing, but only got lucky two times when asking for the POS displays which showed my childhood heroes. These days – being a media buyer myself and working in an agency that handles the promotion of brands and products in instore-environments – I try to look beyond the scope of traditional pop-up displays and banners.
We started using a 3D technique for floor advertising that is provided by german agency Shapeshifter Media ( http://www.shapeshiftermedia.com ) two years ago. This type of POS ad will display a brand or product as a 3D display on the ground. What started out as an experiment has become a standard in the majority of the campaigns that we drive for our clients.
Well …. you cant steal these ads from the store ….. but we get emailed photographs that customers took while standing on the 3D display on a regular basis. Guess what your client says when you forward them these photos – they just love it.
